Folic Acid is a member of the B group of vitamins and is used in the body for the production of nucleic acids and DNA. It helps in the utilisation of sugar, amino acids and the division of body cells.
Adults and children over 12 years of age, one tablet daily. Do not exceed recommended daily intake unless advised by a suitably qualified person.
Folic acid supplementation preconception and during pregnancy is very important as it can prevent Spina Bifida (Neural Tube defects leading to birth defects). A minimum dose of 400mcg of folic acid daily for at least 3 months is recommended in order to prevent Spina Bifida. It is also recommended that women trying to conceive should also supplement diet with at least 400mcg of Folic Acid.
Folic acid is vital in maintaining mental function and emotional health due to its effect on serotonin and dopamine in the body (compounds that effect emotion as well as other bodily functions). In combination with Vitamin B12, Folic acid reduces the risk of arthrosclerosis of the heart.
Supplementation with Folic Acid may be considered:
Pregnancy (to prevent birth defects)
Prevention of cardiovascular arthrosclerosis
Depression and senility
