Omega 3 fish Oils have been proven to be very useful in lowering High Triglycerides in the blood and thus reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications.
An adequate intake of EPA and DHA during pregnancy and lactation is important as the mother is the only source of these fatty acids. DHA is a critical nutrient in the early stages of a childs life for brain and vision development. Lack of DHA in the diet may also lead to poorer mental performance or learning difficulties. Omega 3 fatty acids have also been used in autoimmune conditions such as Crohns Disease due to its anti-inflammatory properties by improving the growth of the intestinal mucosa and thus improving the ability to absorb nutrients more effectively. It is because of this anti-inflammatory property that Omega 3 fatty acids may prove beneficial in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus as well.
Omega 6 Fatty acids (GLA) are known as essential fatty acids as the body cannot synthesize them and instead absorbs them from food. Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) has been used to alleviate PMS and menorrhagia (heavy periods). GLA is thought to improve symptoms of PMS such as headache, depression, bloating and irritability by regulating the production of prostaglandins. It also helps in reducing breast pain and tenderness during the cycle. GLA has been shown to improve nerve function in Diabetics and therefore may be useful in preventing Diabetic Neuropathy in Type I and II Diabetes. GLA may also improve skin tone and conditions such as eczema and dryness due to its Omega 6 properties (retaining moisture in skin).
